Nico van Aelstyn is a principal at Beveridge & Diamond, P.C., a national environmental law firm with its largest office in Washington, DC. He is based in San Francisco and interacts with colleagues across the Firm’s six other offices on a daily basis to serve clients domestically and internationally. He co-chairs the Firm’s Air & Climate Change practice group and its Environmental practice group.

Nico has more than 25 years of environmental counseling and litigation experience. His environmental counseling and regulatory compliance practice focuses on climate change and in particular California’s cap-and-trade program, renewable energy development, sustainability, and transactions. Since its adoption in 2006, Nico has been active on all aspects of California’s groundbreaking climate change law, AB 32, including advocacy in the ARB rulemaking proceedings to implement the statute, participating in litigation challenges, and advising clients on compliance issues.

Nico’s environmental litigation practice encompasses cost recovery actions, challenges to regulations, regulatory enforcement actions, and representation of PRPs and PRP groups at Superfund sites. He has handled matters in state and federal courts across the country, including the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as various administrative fora.
